The Japanese soon copied this good idea. Over time most capstan shafts become very shiny with this surface less able to provide the correct grip on the tape thus increasing wow and flutter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen Revox Studer introduced the dulled shafts they indicated in a service bulletin that this allows lower pinch roller pressure with improvements in tape wander and thus wow and flutter but also less tape wear. To give you an idea of the significance of this, early machines had pinch roller pressure of 1.2 - 1.5 KgF whilst later machines this was reduced this to 0.8 KgF.  Early machines you are able to adjust this but on later machines like the A810 it is essentially not adjustable or within a very narrow range. Thus, it is really important on later machines to restore the capstan surface.  In the factory tech bulletin they also suggest that all early shafts would benefit from the same reconditioning process. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe have teamed up with a retired ex Studer engineer who has the machinery and know-how to recondition shafts. At one time in his apprenticeship he actually worked in the capstan shaft conditioning shop. I now insist all machines that come through our workshop have their shafts reconditioned.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCan your shaft be reconditioned?\u003c\/strong\u003e As long as there is no obvious mechanical degradation like grooves or ridges, most capstan shafts can be reconditioned. We can recondition any capstan shaft fitted to Studer and Revox machines including the old 36 series (G36 etc). The process does not involve grinding, or abrasion but more akin to fine controlled bead blasting which does not 'remove' metal per say but rather 'melds' the metal surface without significantly altering its dimensions. This can be done between 5 - 10 times.  You simply send us your capstan shaft and when we have collected 5 or more they are done as a batch to keep setup costs down. When we send the shaft back it includes a small amount of appropriate lubricant sufficient for 1 motor plus 2 or 3 service application in the future.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJapanese machines \u003c\/strong\u003e for each type of shaft a special jig has to be made up. In addition there is confusing and poor quality historical literature on the OEM and kit versions as well as valve replacements and operational configurations (ultra linear and triode).  We spent a lot of time and effort to try and understand what needed replacing and deciphering the confusing literature, hearsay and innuendo.  We were so impressed with the results and subsequent performance of this amplifier that we decided to offer a restoration \/ overhaul kit and of course the benefit of our research and 'figuring out' what makes this amplifier really tick. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe large can capacitors.  \u003c\/strong\u003eThese amplifiers have some pretty unique and different electrolytic can type capacitors necessitating us having to make them in house. All are now can isolated and are easily\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eretrofitted without any drilling or metalwork needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ethe large dual 2x 220uf 550V is now  2x 220uf 700V \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ethe positive common  triple 3x 47uf 450V is now 3x 50uf 450V\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ethe negative common triple  3 x 47uf 450V is now 3x 50uf 450V\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ethe dual 2x 47uf 350V connected in parallel is now 1x 120uf 450V\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhy So Many Parts?\u003c\/strong\u003e   Initially on this project we replaced (as we always do) all polar electrolytic capacitors. However there were poor attempts to reconfigure the amplifier for ultra linear operation, some browned resistors and a few non standard hacks. We soon realised that besides the electrolytic capacitors there were about 10 other components that had severely deteriorated and needed replacing. Further, once we got the amplifiers working we found intermittent random noise was generated by the B9A PCB valve bases due to contacts being corroded and some of the soldering deteriorated. After measuring a few of the other heat prone resistors and non polar capacitors we came to the conclusion that for a rather minimal extra amount in $ one can and should replace all the likely vulnerable resistors, capacitors and valve bases. This covered almost all the resistors and capacitors.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePoor Existing Archival Literature.  \u003c\/strong\u003eThe archival literature available is pretty poor quality in terms of clear schematics, valve alternatives and configurations. So setting up on one and using the other could mean a variation  of 0.75 - 1.5 Db difference in level between std and long play and the optimum bias will also not be the same.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eHow critical is it that I use the exact tape formulation all the time? Their main advantage is economy in that you get 44% more tape and time on a reel. However you dont get something for nothing and lifespan is reduced. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eSM900 (std play) and LPR90 (long play) have similar but not exactly the same magnetic properties despite what the manufacturer implies. Similarly for SM911 \/ LPR35 and ATR Master \/ MDS 36 . So setting up on one and using the other could mean a variation  of 0.75 - 1.5 Db difference in level between std and long play and the optimum bias will also not be the same.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eHow critical is it that I use the exact tape formulation all the time? You can use any tape formulation on any machine no matter what it has been set up on and it will work OK but not optimally. You wont break anything!
