END OF TAPE SENSOR for all Revox & Studer cassette machines
This is the later end of tape module with a visible red LED. It fits all Studer and Revox cassette machines with some minor modifications, the parts for which are supplied as well as fitting and calibration instructions .
This OEM part is 1.721.170.00 as fitted to B215 and A721. It is a suitable replacement for Revox and Studer A710 and B710 models as well.
The operation of the end of tape function is really important for reliable operation of the cassette machine. When the tape comes to the clear leader in FFWD/RWD, spooling must gently stop before the tape ends. This is the proper function of the EOT system. The tape must not career onwards to the end and stop abruptly. If it does its not good for the reel motors, reel tables or the tape. Most machines coming into our workshop have an issue due to one or more reasons
- EOT not adjusted properly often the case
- Someone in the past thought the sensor was faulty and replaced with the later sensor without correspondingly updating associated components. Its not a straight swap.
- There is a great variation between different tapes and leaders in terms of transmittance of IR light which the sensor works on.
- Failure of the EOT sensor
Revox / Studer tried a number of different solutions to account for a wide difference between the optical properties of cassettes.
If this optical system does not work then in FFWD and RWD the tape will not stop when the clear leader is encountered and the motion is only arrested physically at the end of the tape abruptly. Although the motion sensor will now switch the drive off, the shock of the abrupt ending wears out the reel motor reel table spindle grip mechanisms on the motor shaft as well as the reel motors and the tape itself. It can also damage the driver transistors. Any slippage of the reel tables results in intermittent problems in FFWD / RWD. You must make sure the EOT system is adjusted and functioning correctly for the range of tapes you might use.
